The Red Dress – a True Story

I hate dresses.  I really do.  That is until recently.

While I was in Salt Lake City for the Stampin’ Up Convention, I stopped dead in my tracks in front of the most AWESOME store on the planet!  It was one of those moments where you are sure you heard the angels signing and suddenly a heavenly light fell softly on the most amazing dress I had ever seen.

The store was called “Bettie Page“.  It’s a vintage and retro clothing store that has just enough touch of modern to make it the most amazing clothing store EVER!

The last dress I purchased for myself, outside of my wedding dress, was in 1990.  Yes, that’s right.  But, when I tried on this dress, I FLOATED out of the dressing room.  It was the perfect cut, the perfect shade of red, the best fabric I had ever worn…PERFECT EVERYTHING…and it matched my WEBSITE!!!!

I just knew my girlfriends would think it was too poofy (it has huge crinolines underneath) and talk me out of it.  That’s what friends are for, right?  Nope!  They started snapping pictures of me and texting them to my husband and begging me to buy it!  Rich was THRILLED to know I was considering buying a dress.  I kept waiting for him to ask me how much it was (I’m not sayin’).  He never asked and STILL won’t ask.  He loved the dress and couldn’t wait to take me out on a date.

Okay, so now …let’s see the dress….

We were invited to a fundraising dinner for the Oklahoma Baptist Children’s Home and it was the perfect time to wear “the dress”.  I felt like a million bucks!  My hubby, Rich, looks pretty darn handsome too, don’t you think?  🙂

So, you may be asking yourself, “What does this fabulous dress have to do with Stampin’ Up?”

Here’s my Stampin’ Up version of my dress!  My dear friend and fellow Stampin’ Up demonstrator, Kay Kalthoff, created a different version of  this cute little project.  I changed it up to fit “the dress” and thought it came out fabulous!

A couple of thin mints (yum) and I have a sweet thank you gift to give my friend Kathy who gave us the tickets to the fundraiser.  Candy is always a good Thank You gift.  😉

Thank you for allowing me to share my dress story but there’s more.

Now that I found Bettie Page, I am addicted.  I have about 6 dresses picked out that I REALLY REALLY want!  So, from the girl who hated dresses, to a girl with a new obsession for retro dresses.  SCARY, isn’t it?

So, whatever you do, DON’T go to BETTIEPAGECLOTHING.COM.  DON’T DO IT!  Don’t even THINK about it!  It’s a dangerous website!  DANGER DANGER DANGER!!!!  lol  If you insist on going, pick up something for me, won’t you?

Hope you all have a fabulous day!  I think I will go put on my dress and go to Chick-fil-a.  🙂

Thanks Cindy! You should see when I do the whole 50’s thing to it. I have the white gloves (they belonged to my grandmother and they are so pretty) and a little white hat with a birdcage netting on it. Just wish I had the 50’s hair. I can’t do a thing with this short hairstyle!

Oh sure, Connie. I think you deserve them. I’ll do as you asked and not go the that dress website for a little while; especially, since I live away up here in Prince Edward Island, Canada. I always find it hard to find a pretty dress but if I get desperate, I may order one from this shop if shey ship to Canada. Christian hugs….Donna

Connie, you look absolutely stunning. If my figure was half as good as yours, my husband would be in trouble with my purchasing dresses. Your thank you project matched very well. Thank you also for the connection to the UK, loved the boxes. Dorene

They have sizes up to 4x. That was one of the things I loved most about this store. FINALLY a store that realizes that we are not all a Size 2!

  8. You look fabulous Connie – I love this on you! If you are liking “retro” styles, check out Modcloth.com
It’s one of our favorite websites for retro/vintage styles. But, it should also come with a warning label like the one you mentioned. Danger to the checkbook! Can’t wait to see you in a few weeks!

  9. Connie, I love that store!!! I’ve purchased several dresses from them! You look beautiful! Make sure you check out their online outlet store, they always have great specials.

  10. Mary Ann Huntington says:

Oh wow, your hubby’s eyes had to pop out when he saw you in that beautiful dress. You looked darling.

  12. You look fantastic Connie. Love the project too

    • Connie says:

Yes, but you were one of the girlfriends who was supposed to talk me OUT of the dress. So glad you didn’t!!!

  13. denise says:

Love the look!! I think the pearl necklace is the perfect touch. If Leave It To Beaver had been filmed in color, I am sure June Cleaver would have worn this red dress! You sure know how to have fun.

  14. Bev says:

You look gorgeous in the dress, or the dress looks gorgeous on you. Not sure which just know it’s GORGEOUS. Great picture of both of you. Not sure I should visit either site that was mentioned as my retired budget would have heart failure, well maybe just a peek. Love the card and looking forward to the video.

  15. Mary McIver says:

  16. Tammy Jo Tanner says:

Oh my goodness, you tell the best stories. Thank you for sharing it with use. The dress is fabulous and look great on you. I also love the dresses you made with the candies in them. You have such great talents and I am so glad you share them. Blessing to you and your family.

  17. Lenny says:

Love the website you shared! What a hoot. You and hubby look like the perfect couple out on the town. Love looking at you website, too. Thanks

  18. Brenda (LadyofCards) says:

Connie, I’m not sure why you strayed away from dresses and it really doesn’t matter, for there are those times, I won’t wear a dress/skirt (not even to church). Then there are those times, when I feel like a dress/skirt and that is all I’ll wear. Whatever your reason, I’m glad no one talked you out of getting the dress. You look really nice in it and it seems to call your name (made for you). In short, I think that dress was there waiting for you. I think it was there for you to wear to the event. Yes, your hubby looks really nice too. His smile is from ear to ear and maybe because of the lady next to him in the ‘Pretty Red Dress’. I think you matched it well also. I like the handbag too.
    Hugs ‘N Blessings

  19. You remind me of my tom-boy daughter, who hated dresses. She showed up at a shower the summer she turned 30 wearing a skirt and the cutest floral printed high heeled sandals, and everybody went nuts. Laura, what happened? You are in a dress AND heels?! She said, I don’t know what happened. I turned 30 a few weeks ago, and suddenly I had the craving for some sexy shoes and a short skirt! Suddenly I love them, and my husband does, too.
LOVE the red dress, and you can never have enough red dresses! I also made the dress favors (Kay is my upline, btw) for a bridal shower with a dress for the bride, matching bridesmaids, and floral dresses for all the guests. Too much fun.

    • Connie says:

I love Kay! I got to know her at Founder’s Circle last year and she is absolutely precious! Tell her I said HELLO!

I think I am a lot like your daughter (except the tom-boy part). I just never felt comfortable in a dress but there was something about the cut and style of that dress that made me rethink it.

  20. Oh, Connie, I am bad 🙁 I went to the site! OMG! They have a store at Mall of America (only 25 min. drive from my home!) I will have to check out. And, they carry plus sizes 🙂
Now you have the dress, you need the pinup photos to go with it. Check this out (my niece is the pregnant one with the kids in tow in their sample lineup). https://www.facebook.com/studiobetties?hc_location=timeline

I warned you!! You will love shopping there. It’s just the most fun experience ever! I’m going to be in Las Vegas and they there are 2 stores there. I may have to check it out! LOVED the Facebook page! How cool would it be to have her do my photography!!! That would be amazing! She’s really GOOD!

  21. Phoebe says:

So THAT’S the inspiration for your awesome luggage tag! Love the dress, very chic and you both look awesome.

  22. Molly says:

What a sweet post! You look so adorable in your cute dress and it fits you like a dream. You were right, that website could be dangerous to the pocketbook.

  23. Melanie C says:

Hi Connie, you look wonderful there’s something special about how you feel wearing a dress, I’m currently having to wear dresses as a strange side effect from some recent surgery but I’m loving that feeling of being girly.

  24. Tanya Butler says:

Absolutely love the dress! So cute!!!!

  25. Love retro style, you look fab in the dress. You might also want to see the WhirlingTurban.com site.

  26. Lesley says:

Loving that dress! I’m already a Betty Paige fan, found the stoire when I visited Las Veas last year. I have a fab dress and bolero from here in the UK which I’m going to wear to the Good wood Revival. I bought it from Vivian’s of Holloway – take a look and see what you think! http://www.vivienofholloway.com/en/category/50s%20Halterneck%20Polkadot%20Dress/1950s-halterneck-polka-dot-dress/1227/
