Today in Teach Me That, I will be showing you how to do a simple Alcohol Watercoloring technique. Guys, this technique is SO easy you are going to be blown away by your own talent.
I’ve told you before, I can’t watercolor. It just never looks right but I think I just needed the beginner’s guide to watercoloring. Well, I found it and now I am sharing it with you.
Are you ready to learn how? Here we go!
- Begin with an Aqua Painter filled with rubbing alcohol. 70% or 91%, it doesn’t matter.
- I highly recommend Glossy Cardstock for this technique. The ink puddles beautifully on that high gloss.
- You will want to protect your work surface. Place your cardstock on a cutting plate or the Clear Block F. You can also use a plate or anything else that can easily be cleaned.
- I prefer 2 different color ink pads of the same hue. I am using Daffodil Delight and Crushed Curry.
- Press your lightest color ink pad into the lid. This will form a little puddle of ink onto the lid and this will act as your palette.
- Press the barrel of the Aqua Painter until a single drop of alcohol lands on the ink.
- Swirl it around really well on the lid.
- Swirl the ink all over the glossy cardstock making sure it’s all covered.
- Repeat the process with the darker color of ink.
- Tap and swirl this color around.
- Press the barrel of the Aqua Painter if you need to move the ink around. You want it to have a two-tone swirly look.
- I wanted to speed the drying process along so I used my heat tool for about 15 seconds to dry the paper.
- Time to stamp a focal image! I choose to stamp in Basic Black because it is Archival ink so it can resist water and alcohol.
- Again, I wanted to speed up the drying process so I heat set the stamped image.
- Clean your Aqua Painter by brushing it back and forth on a paper towel or cloth until it comes clean.
- Choose your next ink pad color and repeat the process of dropping a single drop of alcohol onto the puddle of ink in your lid.
- Color in the leaves on the stamped image.
- No need to stay in the lines. The alcohol will bleed and look amazing!
- Clean the Aqua Painter on the towel or cloth and follow the same steps with your next color.
- I chose Rose Red. Color in the flowers.
- You can allow your stamped image to dry or heat set it with the heat tool.
- I like to buff the glossy cardstock (make sure the image is good and dry) with a towel or tissue. What’s not to love about SHINY cardstock?
Isn’t it beautiful? Are you ready to create a card using the technique?
Here are the measurements for my card but get creative with your project:
- Rose Red – 8 ½” x 5 ½”, score and fold at 4 ¼”
- Basic Black – 3 ½” x 3 ½”, embossed with the Layered Leaves Embossing Folder
- Glossy White Cardstock – 4 ¾” x 3″

I want to thank all of you who tuned into my Facebook LIVE broadcast last night. I had SO much fun. I hope you did too. I was so excited about how those cards turned out. Such bright colors and the Lovely Friends stamp set was a perfect accent. Thank you thank you thank you for all your comments, likes, and LOVES you sent during the broadcast. It made me incredibly happy. I will go back through the comments and answer any questions I may have missed.
If you missed last night’s show, not a problem. I will be editing it a bit (it’s a longer video than what you’re used to with me) and I will post that tomorrow here on my blog. 3 cards in one video! I think you’ll like it. 🙂
I sure appreciate you joining me today! Did you learn a new technique? I hope so. Glossy Watercoloring is so much fun to do. I love how the ink bleeds out. It just looks more “watercolored” that way.

Oh yes Connie, your FB live last nite was WONDERFUL! It was like being in your home. It was fun and informative. Thank You so much! ?
I was hoping it would feel like we were stamping together ?
I hate to say that I wrote myself a note to be online at 7 pm for you live on fb and then I wasn’t here. Please do that again some time and I’ll try to do better. Love your videos and hate so bad that I missed you on August 2nd.
Thank you for sharing this technique….so pretty! If I don’t have the Black ink will Moment work? I know it works with Copics. Will it work here with the rubbing alcohol AND the waterbased ink? Thanks so much.
PatM
The Momento and rubbing alcohol didn’t like each other on glossy cardstock. It smeared the black ink. I would recommend the Archival Black ink if stamping on glossy cardstock.
Connie, you are amazing with your technique demos. Thanks bunches.
