10 Creative Papercraft Upcycle Ideas

I originally shared these top 10 upcycle hacks a few years ago, and they’ve become some of my most requested tips. These ideas prove that the best craft supplies might already be hiding in your junk drawer, makeup bag, or even your recycling bin!

1. Transform Ribbon Scraps into Mini Bows

0:50 – Don’t toss out those little scraps of ribbon when you trim down a bow! Even the smallest pieces can be useful. Simply tie Baker’s Twine or Linen Thread in the center of those ribbon scraps for a quick and easy mini bow. These tiny bows are perfect for adding delicate touches to cards, scrapbook pages, or gift tags. The contrast between the ribbon and twine creates a charming, rustic look that complements many crafting styles.

2. Repurpose Sweater Ribbons and Old Buttons

2:00 – Those pesky ribbons in the shoulders of sweaters might seem useless, but save them! They make wonderful embellishments for cards and paper crafts. If the ribbon is white or a light color, you can customize it by coloring it with Stampin’ Blends or alcohol markers to match your project perfectly.

I missed talking about this in my video but here’s another ideas. That drawer full of buttons from clothes you no longer own shouldn’t go to waste. Add a little Baker’s Twine or Linen Thread through the button holes to create an adorable and completely free accent for your papercraft projects. These button embellishments add texture and visual interest to any card or scrapbook layout.

3. Give Old Makeup New Life in Crafting

2:48 – Time to dig into the back of your makeup drawer for two fantastic upcycle hacks! That old eyeshadow you never use anymore can create stunning shimmery effects on your crafts. Simply stamp an image using VersaMark ink, then brush the eyeshadow over it with the little sponge applicator. The result is a beautiful, shimmery image that adds glamour to any project.

Don’t forget about old makeup brushes either! Clean them thoroughly, and they become fabulous stippling tools for creating textured backgrounds on your cards. The different brush sizes and shapes can create various effects you won’t get with traditional craft tools.

4. Turn Pop Tabs into Ribbon Buckle Slides

5:54 – Pop tabs from cans make excellent ribbon buckle slides! Thread your ribbon through the tab opening for an instant industrial-chic look. While many beverages come with silver tabs, some have black ones that add a bold accent to your projects.

Want a custom color? Find some old nail polish and paint those pop tabs any shade you need. This technique works especially well for masculine cards or projects with a vintage or steampunk aesthetic. Plus, you’re giving these small metal pieces a second life instead of sending them to recycling.

5. Upcycle Junk Mail into Craft Materials

7:55 – Before you toss that junk mail into the recycling bin, consider how you can upcycle it for crafting! Junk mail often features interesting colors, patterns, and textures that are perfect for paper crafting. Use it to make fun dimensional flowers, run it through detailed die cuts for unique shapes, or even use it for sentiment dies when you need practice cuts.

The sturdy cardstock used in many promotional mailers works wonderfully for testing new techniques or creating layers in your projects. This hack essentially gives you free patterned paper while reducing waste.

6. Save Photopolymer Stamp Window Sheets

11:06 – Here’s a little-known secret: Stampin’ Up!’s photopolymer stamps come with a ‘free’ clear window sheet that most crafters throw away. Save these transparent sheets – they’re incredibly versatile for different projects! Use them as windows in shaker cards, stencils for ink blending, or protective covers for delicate elements.

Bonus tip: The lighter, more flexible sheets can be run through an embossing folder to create interesting texture and shine effects on card layers. This technique adds dimension and visual interest without any additional cost.

7. Repurpose Stampin’ Dimensionals Frames

12:41 – I love Stampin’ Dimensionals, don’t you? When you have finished off all those fabulous little hexagons, don’t throw the sheet away. The edges, as I call them, the ‘bones’ of the Dimensionals, can be used to add larger focal images to your cards. Get all your money’s worth from each and every sheet!

8. Use Dryer Sheets for Easy Die Cutting

13:40 – Laundry and crafting don’t usually go together, but here’s the one exception that will change your die-cutting game! Save your used dryer sheets and place them between your cardstock and detailed dies when running them through your die-cutting machine. The slippery surface of the dryer sheet makes removing those intricate die-cut pieces absolutely effortless, preventing tearing and frustration.

This hack is especially useful when working with delicate designs like leaves, snowflakes, or intricate borders where tiny pieces tend to stick in the die.

9. Create Custom Stencils with Dies and Punches

15:56 – Make your own stencils using either punches or shape dies you already own.

Shape dies work wonderfully for creating repeating background patterns too! This technique essentially doubles the value of your existing tools by giving them a completely different function.

10. Amazing Backgrounds and Die Cuts Can Be Made with Strip Scraps

17:44 – What to do with those little strips of cardstock or Designer Series Paper? Add them to a piece of copy paper (or junk mail works too!). Begin with a piece of 4 ¼” x 5 ½” copy paper or junk mail. Place adhesive on each strip of cardstock or Designer Series Paper and adhere to the copy paper. Trim it down to 4” x 5 ¼” and now you can add it to a card front.

Bonus Tip: Die cut a label die from it and now you have a window layer AND a label you can use on another card.
